Welcome to Sanford 365 – A year in Photos and Videos

Yes, I am taking on the challenge! 365 days, 365 photos – and at the end I might become a better photographer and you might get a pretty good impression of life in Sanford, Florida, home town of choice. This project was inspired by another 365 challenge that I came across. Check it out, it’s really interesting and you might get inspired, too ;o)

So here’s basically what I will do:

Take a picture a day

Post pictures at least 3 times a week

Each picture will have its own blog entry (so on some days there might be several new pictures and blog entries, but be assured they are all taken on different days

The pictures will mainly show scenes, objects and people in Sanford, Florida, but on some days I might be on an excursion to other areas in Central Florida, Florida, or the World ;o) Can’t promise anything but the next year might take me to Colombia, Panama, Germany, Italy and France. I might compare these places to Sanford though to keep the images in context.

I am excited to take on this challenge and a bit nervous, too. All I’ll have to do is making it my habit to take a picture (at least) a day! So let’s take on this year, starting on September 18, 2008, ending on September 17, 2009.

Hope you enjoy my pics and feel free to post comments anytime.

Announcing the (big?) Sanford365 Move

Screenshot of the new and improved Sanford365

Screenshot of the new and improved Sanford365

So this is going to be a bit tricky but hopefully it will all work out. For reasons mentioned in my last blog post I have decided to “self-host” my Sanford365 Blog and am moving the entire content from http://sanford365.wordress.com to http://sanford365.com. A big THANK YOU to WordPress Support at this point! You guys are awesome!

In the future when you type in the old wordpress.com address you will automatically be re-directed to the new one (Sanford356.com) (this is called domain mapping). Now for many of you it won’t make a difference because I had previously directed all direct traffic to http://sanford365.com anyway (so as usual, all you need to remember is Sanford365.com). This should all work out perfectly, however there might be one little problem: Email subscriptions and RSS feeds might (!) cause some issues. I will only find out after moving the blog, therefore I wanted to be sure to let all my subscribers, fans and friends know of this potential RSS feed/Email subscription change.

What that means for all of you who subscribe to Sanford365:

  • In case the RSS/subscription links break I will send out a separate Email asking everyone to who is interested to “re-subscribe” to Sanford365. The email will come from Claudia@sanford365.com, so please watch out for it during the next couple of days or so :o )
  • In case RSS/subscription links don’t break, just keep enjoying Sanford365 Updates right to your inbox or preferred RSS reader!

I look forward to staying in touch with each and every subscriber, friend and fan. Here’s to a happy 2010 for all of us!

Cheers,
Claudia

Happy New Year!

New Years Eve 2009 at Carlos and Charlies

New Years Eve 2009 at Carlos and Charlies

Happy New Year to everyone! As promised, Sanford365 will continue throughout 2010! I hope you had a wonderful start into 2010 and wish you a successful, happy and healthy new year!

With my sister Gabi

With my sister Gabi

New Years Eve 2009 was fun! We spent it at Carlos and Charlies and Liam Fitzpatricks. The two bars got together for an awesome block party that was very well visited and, as expected, a huge success. I will post a short video below later so you can see what I’m talking about…

It was also a great start into the new year because my sister Gabi is currently visiting me from Germany. After a short trip to Savannah and Amelia Island (pics will follow under Excursions) we were back on time to celebrate the end of a fabulous 2009 and the start of a hopefully even more fabulous 2010! I am liking the number already!

Wow, can you believe it, we have already made the first decade of this century, well, millenium? Isn’t that crazy? What has changed for you in this first decade? Sometimes it seems like 2000 was just yesterday. And what are your resolutions? Have you made any? I have to admit, I’m a bit behind with that (because unfortunately I caught a bad cold with a very painful sore throat). As soon as I’m fit again though I am going to put those resolutions on paper – and hopefully stick to them. One however, I already have: Keep Sanford365 alive and move the blog over to a self-hosted version of WordPress. Now that sounds easier than it is, believe me. The reason for that is simply that my blog is too big (well, that’s a good thing but as I found out last month it can also hurt you).

So what can you expect thanks to that resolution?

  • Weekly Sanford365 blog posts (about Sanford and area events/businesses/things to do etc.)
  • A nicer design and easier to navigate web site with more resources and structured content
  • More interaction among Sanford365 readers

Now all I have to do is keep my fingers crossed that the guys and girls at WordPress can help me with this ambitious request! If it all works out you’ll soon notice some positive changes here ;)

Carlos and Charlies Lake Mary – Video Interview and New Year’s Eve Party

Below is a little video interview I did back in the Fall with Carlos & Charlies in Lake Mary. Thanks to Melanie for hosting! You did such a wonderful job! And thanks of course also to Jorge, manager at Carlos and Charlies!

If you don’t have any plans for new year’s yet, rumor has it, Carlos and Charlies is having another fun block party (most likely just like for Halloween with Liam Fitzpatrick’s) on New Year’s Eve 2009. There will be NO cover charge which makes the whole thing even more fabulous :)

More news from Carlos & Charlies: Every Thursday night, FREE Salsa Lessons provided by Salsa Heat Dance Studio! If you feel like dancing to some hot Latin rhythms just like the pros, you should come out here sometime!

World of Beer Opening at Colonial Town Park in Lake Mary

World of Beer Lake Mary FL

World of Beer Lake Mary FL

Many of you might already have seen the sign, yes, it’s right, World of Beer is opening a brand new location here in the West Sanford area at Colonial Town Park. The exact opening date is not known yet but it sure will be a great new place to hang out and add a lot to the “barscape” of Lake Mary and Sanford so I am excited about it! World of Beer will be settling in at the former Mama Fu (loved that place, too bad it’s gone!) location.

I personally have never been at a World of Beer but I have friends who have spoken highly of “Florida’s Best Beer Bar”. Based in Tampa, the company will open their 8th location in Lake Mary FL. Other locations are Tampa (3 bars), St. Petersburg, Sarasota, Coconut Creek, and Melbourne.

For more info about World of Beer please click here to visit their web site!

So what does “Opening Soon” mean? I will post more updates here as I receive them, so, as usual, stay tuned :)

PS: Excuse the bad shot and reflection it it. Only had my cell phone camera with me that day…

Affordable Holiday Events in Orlando and Sanford FL 2009

Wow, I can not believe it is December already!! Where has the year gone??

Well, first of all my apologies to all the readers of Sanford365 – as you may have noticed I have had some type of “blogger’s block” lately. There hasn’t been too much going on here, partially also because I have been thinking hard about where I want to take this blog in the future… Anyway, the break is over and just in time for the holiday season I have my energy back – even though I got really frustrated after missing out on the cutest netbook during last week’s crazy Black Friday sale…should have known better that getting up at 5am will never beat staying up all night and starting the line at 2am, but that’s another story…*sigh*

In this post I just wanted to share Central Florida’s hottest (or shall I say, coldest) Holiday events for 2009. Many of them you will recognize from the previous holiday season and last year’s post on Sanford365, I know, there are always the classics, especially the theme parks. Nevertheless, there are also many local events, most of them very affordable for the whole family, and, of course, I would like to start out the list with my favorite place in Central Florida, Sanford :)

This is how I divided the list:

  1. Sanford Holiday Events
  2. Seminole County Holiday Events
  3. Orlando Area Holiday Events
  4. Orlando Theme Park Holiday Events

1. Affordable Holiday Events in Sanford FL

What I like about the Sanford area is that there is lots to do at an affordable price. That is especially great for families with kids. No need to drive all the way down to the attractions to spend your hard earned money (unless you want to of course…).

Ice Skating Rink at Lake Eola – December 11th-20th

Where: Lake Eola Park, Orlando FL
When: December 11th to 20th
More info: 407-898-3130

Wow, so ice skating by the lake is not only something Northerners can do these days :) New this year is the ice skating rink at Lake Eola (southeast corner over water on the International Bridge). Sure, we may never see Lake Eola frozen, but it’s quite a nice idea to bring some of the major symbols of the holiday season (just think of NYC’s ice skating rink!)to sunny Florida. Also sure, unfortunately, this may not be great for the environment so I’m a bit torn… NEvertheless, I am sure this will be a huge hit (despite the rink’s small size of barely 2,500 square feet). The official opening of the rink will be December 11th. Retail and food vendors will be present. Hours are daily from 12pm to 8pm Sundays to Thursdays, and 12pm to 10pm Fridays and Saturdays (perfect to visit some of the neighboring bars for a warm drink after the ice skating adventure).

Don’t have ice skates? Don’t worry, for an additional $3 (on top of the $7 entry fee) you will be able to rent ice skates. I am glad I brought my skates from Germany, finally a worthy event to use them, as weird as it may sound to my friends back home, I will be ice skating under palms :)

Gaylord Palms Resort, Orlando’s holiday headquarters, presents this amazing holiday spectacle, created from nearly TWO MILLION pounds of ice!

It is the time of year to peek into the magical and timeless world of the North Pole, bustling workshops, cheerful elves and the jolly old leader himself, Santa Claus. Santa’s efficient, yet frenzied Chief of Staff, the ditzy housekeeper with a secret crush, the high-pressure sleigh salesman and the workshop foreman who does not quite command the English language all combine to keep the place running like clockwork, with the exception of a few mishaps. Soon, a request from one child’s letter throws everything off course and the answer lies in rediscovering the Christmas spirit. Fun for the whole family.

Well, can you guess what’s happening at this daily event? Yes, it snows, that’s right! You have to see it for yourself, so take a trip down to Celebration! The snow begins at 6pm, 7pm, 8pm and 9pm for ten minutes. Best of all, just like snow in real life, it’s free :)

4. Orlando Theme Park Holiday Events

Last but not least, what would the holiday season in Orlando be without its fun and magical theme park events? Unfortunately most of these events are a bit pricier than the average community event so I won’t focus too much on the events here but rather provide you with a more info link.

Christmas at Magic Kingdom® – through early January, 2010

When visiting the Magic Kingdom this holiday season you will be impressed with the Cinderella castle that features 200,000 “drem lights”.On top of that, the theme park has been beautifully decorated for the holidays. As we draw closer to the holidays there will be special daytime holiday show of “Mickey’s Once Upon a Christmas Parade” with toy soldiers, gingerbread men and, of course, Mickey and Minnie.

Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party – through December 18th, 2009

Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party is an event that you can attend after the regular park hours, starting at 7pm. The party requires a separate admission. Dates: December 1, 3, 4, 6, 8, 10, 11, 13, 15, 17 and 18. The show features snow on Main Street, “Christmasy” Disney characters, special stage shows and fireworks. Guests can also enjoy complimentary hot cocoa and cookies.

Christmas at Disney’s Hollywood Studios® – through early January, 2010

Disney’s Hollywood Studios are featuring the Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights. Quite an interesting story:

The spectacle was originally the creation of Arkansas businessman and philanthropist Jennings Osborne. It began 20 years ago when Jennings strung 1,000 red lights as a Christmas gift to his daughter Breezy. Soon, their 22,000-square-foot home was covered in millions of lights … and the display continued to grow and glow. After the home exhibit grew larger over several years, the Arkansas Supreme Court ordered the display to be turned off. The million-light display was transported to Disney-MGM Studios in 1995, where the spectacle continues to grow larger and brighter each year. Some of Osborne’s original creations still sparkling brightly at the park today are a giant Mickey Mouse light, dozens of flying angels and Santa Claus light designs. In 2006, the lights took a high-tech turn… with a light-show synchronized to holiday music (hence the addition of the word “Dancing” to its official title!).

Holidays Around the World at Epcot® – through December 30, 2009

Out of the theme parks this would be one of my favorite events as it features Holidays Around the World. Learn about Santa in other countries and the many traditions around Christmas. The park also observes Kwanzaa and Hanukkah. As in any Disney Park, lights and beautiful decoration isn’t missing and you will get to enjoy some amazing holiday shows, including the Candlelight Processional, a musical performance by a mass choir and 50-piece orchestra. As special bonus there will be celebrity narrators telling the story of Christmas.

MORE INFO: http://disneyworld.disney.go.com/parks/

Christmas at Disney’s Animal Kingdom® – through early January, 2010

Visitors will enjoy Mickey’s daily “Jingle Jungle Parade” and a sparkling 65 foot Christmas tree and the entrance of the park. Of course there will also be plenty of Disney characters dressed in holiday attire and the and the village has been decorated beautifully and is full of holiday activities and fun.

Festival of the Seasons at Downtown Disney® – through December 24, 2009

Last but not least, this is the only free event at the theme parks (well, because it technically isn’t in a theme park). If you don’t want to spend too much but still have a piece of Dinsney’s magic, visit Downtown Disney and admire their amazing light decoration and holiday flair with daily Santa photo opportunities while strolling along the stores and walks. This is also a great place to find gifts for those not living so close to Disney & Co.

Timacuan Golf Club Tournament on November 13th

I received an Email from a reader and thought this might be of interest for all you golfers :)

On November 13th, 2009 there will be the first annual golf tournament on the Timacuan golf course in Lake Mary. The event will benefit the Make a Wish Foundation. Timacuan Golf Club and Jersey Mike’s Sub have partnered up to help children’s wishes come true. If you need more information please Email Nancy directly at MCKay.N@hotmail.com or call her at 407-732-4401. You can also go to any Jersey Mike’s for an application.

BTW, you don’t have to be a professional golfer. You will be put in a foursome if you don’t have a group. Just tell them your skill level and you’ll be put in a great team.

The event starts at 7:30am and end around 4pm when the winners are announced. There will be a silent auction around 2pm.

The Timacuan Golf Club is actually one of the most famous ones in the Central Florida area. If you are new to the area take a look at it, it really is beautiful – and easily accessible. Just take Rinehart Street North (coming from Lake Mary Blvd) and make a right into the Timacuan subdivision. I am not a golfer but I have heard good things about this golf course. Visit their web site to check it out.

OrlandoSentinel.com asks you to vote for your favorite blog in each category and then, for your favorite overall blog. So essentially the Orbbies are the Oscars among blogs, at least locally, here in the Central Florida area :) And as you may already guess, I would be more than honored to win this award! The goal is, of course, best overall blog, but I would be already super happy to win in one of the categories Sanford365 has been nominated in. Those categories are: Neighborhood and Photography.

More than anything else, this award would be an honor and make me proud of my work. Recognition IS important for any blogger – and motivating!

You can vote once a day, starting on November 2nd at 10 am (so, yes, the voting is open now!) until November 20th at 5pm. So if you like my blog and have been following me, please take the time and give me your (daily) vote!
